Billie Eilish appeared unrecognizable as she traded in her signature streetwear-influenced style for a 1950s-era tightly cinched waist paired with a flared skirt on a Toronto set for her movie debut.

The 24-year-old 10-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar-winning songwriter is set to make her movie acting debut in Sarah Polley‘s film adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s classic 1963 novel The Bell Jar. Eilish is stepping into a leading role in the film as the protagonist, Esther Greenwood, an aspiring writer.

In pictures from the set in Toronto, Canada, Eilish was spotted rocking a bright red short-sleeved knit top, a voluminous full skirt with a red-and-blue check print, and red heels. This comes after Eilish faced backlash for a resurfaced interview about homeschooling and traditional education.

Eilish’s fashion and glam have become widely recognizable for her baggy and oversized silhouettes paired with a '90s-style lip, eyeliner in her waterline, and rosy cheeks. She previously told ELLE that Harlem fashion influencer Bloody Osiris and hip-hop stars Tyler, the Creator, and Missy Elliott are her fashion inspirations.

Stepping into the role of Esther Greenwood in the adaptation of The Bell Jar, Eilish’s fashion gets a 1950s makeover for the costuming. The semi-autobiographical work is based on a young woman’s mental breakdown and eventual recovery after she gets an internship at a women’s magazine in New York City. The book also explores the social politics and pressures facing women in the 1950s.

As seen in the photographs of Eilish on set for the movie, her makeup was minimal, except for a bold red lip. Her hair was also parted deep to the left side of her head. As for accessories, she was seen wearing simple stud earrings.

She’s nearly unrecognizable at first glance, as her hair is also an auburn-brown shade for the role.

In another photo, Eilish was spotted walking down the street with other women, all dressed in colorful full skirts and fitted tops paired with mid-century hairstyles and bold red lips. The ‘50s fashion for women was marked by feminine, formal silhouettes, with full skirts, styled hair and makeup, and accessories.

Another scene showed Eilish walking in the rain, while wearing a teal-colored short-sleeved shirtwaist dress with buttons up the front and a collar over a light pink-colored high-waisted skirt with a thin stripe pattern. She also wore black flats.

While Eilish is known for her darker pop music style with honest lyrics, she also has an ambition for acting. In a 2023 interview with Variety, Eilish was promoting her acting debut in Amazon Prime Video’s Swarm, created by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover.

She told the outlet that she grew up acting in plays, as she was born to actors Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell. She detailed how she had dreamed of becoming an actress since childhood, but put that ambition on hold for her music career.

“I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t wanna do this anymore.’ I did, but it’s always been a deep thing that I’ve been reluctant to talk about because I thought I was really bad,” Eilish told Variety.

The Oscar-winning singer will be joined in her first movie acting role by Carey Mulligan as Mrs. Greenwood, who is Esther’s mom, and Heated Rivalry‘s Connor Storrie.
