Britney Spears posted a poignant statement on X on August 7.

The singer addressed her sons Jayden and Sean, writing, “I wanna tell my kids and people in general that I’m sorry for my mistakes in the past.”

She also discussed her fraught relationship with her parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears.

Britney Spears is reflecting on her relationship with her family in a poignant new statement. On August 7, the pop star owned up to making “mistakes in the past” in a lengthy post uploaded on X.

Spears began by sharing a photo of her two sons, Sean and Jayden, from when they were toddlers. “Those two little bodies came out of my belly,” the singer, 44, wrote. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t until five years ago that I saw they were secretly taken to the beach by my mom and dad...the whole summer.”

Spears also claimed that her father, Jamie Spears, wouldn’t let her “go to a diner” because he was “offended” by “all the attention” she received from paparazzi after “being held” in her home for four months. Britney has previously accused Jamie of controlling her finances and personal life as part of a 13-year conservatorship, which lasted until 2021.

“The pictures I saw of my mom and dad in secret on the beach the whole summer with my children every weekend...I wondered why I wasn’t a part of their cool secret outings,” Britney wrote. “I felt demoralized to live in a country where it was accepted for people like my mom and dad to live secret lives with my children.”

The “Circus” artist said that she “went to [her] knees and cried for two months” as a result of the ordeal.

“Society doesn’t understand the real effects to this very day of the rights and freedoms anyone should be able to have,” Britney continued. “I never got to be me, the real Spears...I used to be unbelievably intelligent and 100 percent I was brainwashed into an ignorant system where every goddamn person took advantage of me.”

“I wanna tell my kids and people in general that I’m sorry for my mistakes in the past,” she added.

The singer explained that her “intention and mindset were in a completely different place” when she “used to perform.”

“Not one time in those 15 years was it ever me,” she wrote, revealing that she was “shamed, embarrassed, and forced to do all of it.”

“As people we all want a hero or someone to look up to but we’re just people at the end of the day...We’re all stars in my eyes cuz I’m simply mamma now,” Spears concluded.
