Brydon Carse has been charged with bringing the cricket into disrepute after being arrested in Derby this summer.

Carse was apprehended by police on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in the early hours of Aug 23 at Molly Malone’s Irish Tavern after Durham won their County Championship match against Derbyshire. He was de-arrested shortly afterwards and returned to the team hotel.

The Cricket Regulator has charged Carse with breaching one of the rules of the professional conduct regulations of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and has referred the case to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel for adjudication.

The regulation in question states that: “No participant may conduct themself in a manner, do any act or make any omission at any time which is improper or which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the ECB, the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute.”

Carse was filmed in handcuffs while England team-mate Matthew Potts was talking to the officers alongside Ben Stokes, the former England cricket captain.

A police statement at the time said: “An investigation into reports of an assault in Derby city centre has been closed. Officers attended Molly Malone’s in Wardwick, Derby, in the early hours of Sunday 23 August.

“A man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was then de-arrested after his details were taken by officers. Following the man leaving the area, staff from the bar told officers that there had been an allegation that a woman had been touched inappropriately over her clothing.

“The victim had asked for help from bar staff and the man was removed from the venue. However, before officers could speak to the woman she had left the bar.

“Inquiries were made to identify the woman who had spoken with bar staff and she was eventually identified and spoken to. She confirmed that she did not want to make any complaint and, in line with her wishes, no further action was taken.

“In line with crime recording standards the incident was recorded on the force software as a sexual assault. Initial statements from the force referred to an assault as neither party had been spoken to in relation to the incident and therefore, to protect the integrity of any potential investigation, we were not able to confirm the nature of the alleged assault at that time.”

Carse has made 58 appearances for England, the last of which came in the fifth Ashes Test against Australia in January. He missed the start of the summer through injury.

Harry Brook, the England white-ball captain, has said Carse needs some time out of the international game.

“I’m very good mates with Carsey. I’ve spoken a lot with him,” Brook said. “Those conversations are private. I think he just needs time away from the international scene. He’s working on a few things behind the scenes and hopefully he’ll be ready at some point in the future.”
