Danny Boyle digitally enhanced the final scene of Trainspotting for its 4K remaster to achieve his original vision
The ending was inspired by the Cuban film Memories of Underdevelopment, which Boyle saw at the Havana Film Festival
The 4K restoration of the 1996 cult classic was released in theaters on June 5, 2026, for its 30th anniversary
There's only one scene from Trainspotting that director Danny Boyle wanted to change when he revisited the film ahead of its 30th anniversary.
When speaking to PEOPLE, Boyle, 69, shares the one "tweak" he made to the movie's 4K remastering, which hit select theaters June 5.
"We had this idea at the end, that end image of him when he walks towards the camera, [Ewan] McGregor, when he walks towards the camera. We always have this idea that he becomes a skull," Boyle shares. "But when we were doing it on film, when it was first made, we couldn't really achieve it because you could only manipulate it and suggest it."
When he worked on the 4K enhancement of the 1996 movie, however, they were able to "kind of digitally enhance it."
"So it becomes more of a skull as he walks towards you. We made it from a Cuban film called Memories of Underdevelopment," the director adds, calling the Tomás Gutiérrez Alea-directed project "a really great film."

"That was stolen from that film," he admits.
Boyle remembers first seeing the film in Cuba alongside the cast of Shallow Grave and the impact it had on him.
"Back then, you went to these film festivals, you got invited to these film festivals in amazing places. This was in Cuba at the Havana Film Festival. And I saw this film. It was an extraordinary film," he reflects. "I thought that's the image for the end of the film we were preparing, which was Trainspotting. That's where it came from."
When revisiting Trainspotting for its milestone anniversary, the Slumdog Millionaire director admits that he wanted to tweak a few things, but he tried to honor the original work.

"Certain people believe you should tweak. I think with something like this, that's so extreme, I don't think you should tweak very much," he says.

When it came to the ending, however, he notes that they were simply able to make it how he originally wanted, thanks to modern technology.
"We tweaked the end because I knew we hadn't quite achieved it on the original film. It wasn't changing it in any way. It was sort of enhancing a look because there was better resolution."
Overall, while revisiting the movie, he found himself thinking, "Wow, that's pretty good."
"That's not being falsely modest. It just shows you get on a roll with a bunch of actors and a script, and you get into a zone... and that's why you should always be careful if you're making a film and people criticize the first day or two, because it does take you time to just get into the role of it," Boyle says.
The 1996 film is based on the seminal best-selling novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh and stars Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle and Kelly Macdonald.
Boyle says, "It's very carefully scripted, but it feels improvised sometimes."
"It's just cascading out of these characters. They're very well cast because you believe them. There's no separation where you think they don't achieve scenes," he reflects. "They seem to hit each scene, whatever it is that's asked for them. They seem to get it."
"It's brilliantly acted, and you all get on a roll because of that," he adds, "You all infect each other in a really good way. Some of it now, I think, 'Oh, I wish I could direct like that now.' "
The film was nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The 4k Digital Restoration of Trainspotting, which was supervised by Boyle, opened in select theaters on June 5, 2026, timed to the 30th Anniversary of the original release.
