New Jersey residents can leave their clocks alone this weekend.

Daylight saving time does not end until Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks will “fall back” one hour and most people will gain an extra hour of sleep. At 2 a.m., clocks will return to 1 a.m.

Many phones, computers and other connected devices should update automatically. Traditional clocks, watches and some appliance and vehicle clocks will need to be changed manually.

When do clocks fall back in 2026?

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1.

People can turn their clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday, Oct. 31. The change marks the return to standard time and shifts an hour of daylight from the evening to the morning.

The end of daylight saving time also means sunsets will arrive about an hour earlier beginning Nov. 1.

Do we gain or lose an hour?

We gain an hour when daylight saving time ends in the fall.

The phrase “spring forward, fall back” is a simple way to remember which direction clocks move. Clocks advance one hour when daylight saving time begins in March and move back one hour when it ends in November.

Daylight saving time began March 8 this year. It will begin again March 14, 2027.

Why do we change the clocks?

Daylight saving time moves an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening during the warmer months. Under current federal rules, it begins at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November.

The current schedule took effect in 2007 under the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which extended daylight saving time by about one month.

Does every state observe daylight saving time?

Most of the United States observes daylight saving time, but Hawaii and most of Arizona do not. The Navajo Nation, including the portion within Arizona, does observe the time change. Several U.S. territories also remain on standard time throughout the year.

New Jersey continues to observe daylight saving time, so clocks across the state will fall back Nov. 1.
