Dane's family announced his death in February with a statement. "With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS," they wrote. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world."

Dane and Gayheart had married in 2004 and welcomed Billie in 2010 and Georgia in 2011. Gayheart filed for divorce in 2014, however the legal proceedings were never finalized. In 2025, she filed to have the divorce petition dismissed.

In his final interview before his death, Dane expressed his love for his estranged wife. "We still love each other deeply, I just think we don't want to live with each other," he said. "But there's a lot of love there. I will have never, by the time anybody sees this, have fallen in love with another woman as deeply as I fell in love with Rebecca. She's the mother of my children, and the whole way that thing came about was so organic and fortuitous. I met Rebecca, and I turned to her friend and I said 'I'm going to marry that girl.'"

In the same interview, Dane left a heartbreaking message for his daughters. Sitting along with the camera recording, he said, "Billie and Georgia, these words are for you. I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall, we had a blast, didn't we?"

He went on to remember all the times they spent at the beach, adding that he will forever see them playing in the water. "Those days, pun intended, pun intended, were heaven," he said.

After giving them some words of advice, he concluded, "I hope I've demonstrated that you can face anything. You can face the end of your days. You can face hell with dignity. Fight girls, and hold your heads high. Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words."
