Hillary Clinton and Mike Pence, powerful political figures of our day from opposing parties, find common ground in Netflix's "The American Experiment." It only took 250 years.
The five-part historical series examining the founding challenges and future of American democracy − executive-produced by Tom Hanks − debuts its trailer exclusively on USA TODAY before streaming June 24.
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, the Brian Knappenberger-directed series "The American Experiment" asks the radical question at the heart of the American Revolution: Can people govern themselves?
"The American Experiment" begins with the American Revolution's major question: Can people rule themselves?
The series covers the American Revolution from the drafting of the Constitution through the first American presidency of George Washington, featuring a diverse array of reenactment voices.

The series features former vice presidents (Pence, Al Gore and Kamala Harris) and cabinet officials, current and former members of Congress (including Nancy Pelosi), a former Supreme Court justice and leading historians from across the political spectrum to present uniquely bipartisan and deeply informed conversations.
"They saw the tyranny of monarchy, and they wanted nothing to do with it," Pence says about the original revolutionaries.
Clinton speaks about how radical the new idea of self-rule, called "The American Experiment," was 250 years ago.
"This is a leap of faith into the unknown," Clinton says.
"The American Experiment" premieres on Netflix on June 24.
