Katey Sagal opens up about having a baby at 52: ‘I have 5 minutes left to have kids’

Katey Sagal said that when she began her relationship with Kurt Sutter, he said, “I don’t wanna have any kids.”

The actress warned Sutter, “I have about five minutes left if you wanna have kids” since she is six years older than him.

Sagal and Sutter eventually welcomed a daughter, Esmé, via surrogate.

Katey Sagal is reflecting on becoming a mother again in her fifties.

The Married…With Children actress, 72, shared her experience welcoming her third child, Esmé, via a surrogate.

“My husband is six years younger than I am,” she said of her spouse Kurt Sutter during a conversation with Ted Danson on his podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name. “And when we met, he was like, ‘I don’t wanna have any kids.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, ‘cause I have about five minutes left if you wanna have kids.’”

Sagal said that Sutter changed his mind several years into their relationship.

“About five years in, we started really talking about it, and so we did the whole surrogate process,” she said. “This is Esmé, my sweet Esmé, who’s 19. She’s my favorite right now. Kids, I love you all.”

The actress also shares two children with her late ex-husband Jack Cameron White: Sarah Grace White, 31, and Jackson White, 30. Sarah works as a musician, while Jackson is an actor in projects like Hulu’s Tell Me Lies.

“My oldest daughter has made the most beautiful record that she wrote and produced,” Sagal shared on the podcast. “She’s amazing. And just to see the process of how you have to be able to market yourself now…labels used to…give you money so you could just be an artist and they do all the selling. And now it’s just a very different world for young artists. It’s hard.”

Sagal said that she has learned to bite her tongue when she wants to offer feedback on her children’s artistic endeavors.

“What I’ve really learned lately is to say things like, ‘I have some thoughts about that. Would you like to hear it?’” she said. “And then if they say, ‘No, Mom, I don’t want to hear it,’ then I have to follow suit.”

That was particularly challenging when Sarah shared rough cuts of her album with the Sons of Anarchy star, who began her career as a musician and released three solo albums after finding success as an actress.

“When my daughter was making her record, she would send me mixes, rough mixes. I had a bunch of notes,” she said. “And I would really have to pick and choose what [to say], because I just felt like I know that world.”

Sagal said that her kids wonder why she continues pursuing so many acting jobs at this stage of her career.

“Their only thing to me is, ‘Mom, you’ve been working for so many years, why don’t you just chill for a while?’” she shared. “I’m like, ‘You guys, I like to work. That is chill for me. I don’t like all the down time. And I don’t really know what else I would do.’”

She also noted that her kids are heavily invested in her career.

“They’re really proud,” she said. “They’re the first ones I call when I get a good job.”
