Mets legend apologizes for 'garbage' comment on air: 'Poor choice of words'

Keith Hernandez has been known to speak his mind on the air during New York Mets games, whether it's about inflatable Grimaces or criticizing another team on the field. And before the team's first game after a very, VERY busy trade deadline, he had something slip out that he had to backtrack on.

As Hernandez and play-by-play man Gary Cohen kicked off the SNY broadcast on Tuesday speaking about all the moves made on Monday, Hernandez remarked, "They definitely shuffled, brought in the truck and took out all the garbage, so to speak."

Minutes later as the Cleveland Guardians delivered the first pitch, Hernandez said this: "I said, 'Got out the garbage,' That's a poor choice of words, folks. I don't want these guys beating me up."

"I can't believe that word came out of my mouth, so my apologies," he added. You can see both those moments below.

The Mets did trade some notable names like Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes, the former of whom had been underperforming before being dealt and who gave up seven earned runs on Tuesday for the Tampa Bay Rays. So, not garbage, but Hernandez did apologize for his comments.
