Paul Rudd has worked on nearly 150 titles in his decades-long career, but his latest marked a major first.
The Power Ballad actor stars in Rain Reign, which is premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 6, as a loving uncle to 12-year-old Rose (Felice Kakaletris), a neurodivergent tween who is reeling after losing her dog Rain in a storm.
For the first time, Paul, 57, is collaborating with his wife, Julie Rudd, who is making her feature film producing debut with the indie.

"She was mighty involved before I was, certainly. It was awesome working with her," Paul tells PEOPLE. "One, she was really good at it. That's not surprising. But it was really nice to go to set every day together. And we filmed it in upstate New York, which is really great because it's not far from where we live."
He added that throughout his career, the two have always communicated about how they were going to make their lives "work" as Paul traveled for shoots, but this marked the first time they didn't have to separate.
"We each kind of have these roles and this was like one of the first times, the first time really, that we really did kind of go to work together and it was really nice," he says. "I loved doing it and I kept thinking about it through my kids' eyes. I liked that angle too."

The pair's kids, Jack, 20, and Darby, 16, were just as excited for their parents' collaboration, even joining them on set multiple times, which Rudd jokes is a rare occurrence for his now young adult and teenage children.

When they were younger, he says, the kids and Julie would come visit him while he was filming, but they would just go to the craft service table, where the food is served, because that's "what they really cared about."
"But then over the last many years, they're not really [coming], either it's in some far away location or they got their lives," Rudd says. "They don't really care. It was kind of cool that they wanted to come to set on this one."
The movie also marks another special collaboration for Paul: a reunion with his Clueless costar Jeremy Sisto, who plays Rose's struggling single father, over 30 years after the 1995 classic was released.

Paul says he felt their shared history when they reunited on set—especially since they have multiple mutual friends and their children have played together in New York City, where they both live.
"To get to work with him was really great, and there was something very gratifying just about the history I suppose we shared," the Ant-Man actor says. "We were both kind of starting off, and one thing you can't manufacture is history with somebody. It really is something to treasure."
Now that the movie is set to make its premiere at Tribeca, Paul says he's just most excited for its newcomer star, Kakaletris, and first-time director Erika Burke Rossa.
"I'm very excited for Felice because she's so great in the movie, and I'm really excited that she's going to get to see it in a film festival, the Tribeca Film Festival, see it with an audience, see herself in a movie up there doing such a great job," he says. "And Erika, it was her first film, that she'll get to see her movie premiere there with the audiences. That's really gratifying."
