Savannah Guthrie is hoping to lead by example when it comes to working amidst one's grief.
The 54-year-old Today co-host returned to work in April amid the ongoing investigation into her 84-year-old mother Nancy Guthrie's Feb. 1 disappearance.
On Monday, June 8, she detailed some of her lingering struggles while returning to the NBC morning show during such a challenging time in her personal life.
"Well, I'm working it out, step by step," Savannah told longtime friend Jenna Bush Hager on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle after Bush Hager praised her faith, calling it a "marvel." "There's this famous scripture about you'll soar on wings like eagles, but there's a part of it which says, 'You'll walk and not grow faint'... there's a time in life when just walking and not growing faint is about as good as it can get. And that's what I feel like I'm doing. I'm trying to walk and not grow faint."
Savannah, who has long been open about her faith and how it has helped her through this ordeal, added, "It's a gift from God that I'm able to do so. But it's always with me. I cry every morning on the way to work, and I cry every morning on the way home. And I'm grateful to have good friends and to be able to come to such a beautiful, joyous and supportive place."
She also shared the message that she gives to others grieving and, especially, to her two children, daughter Vale, 11, and son Charley, 9.
"Like so many people out there, you can hold all of these things together," she said. "I try to tell my kids that too. We can hold our sadness, and we can hold our joy. And if you don't believe it, just watch me."
The seasoned journalist was visibly emotional, sharing, "I've been trying so hard to hold it together, and I promise I will."

Savannah credited the "family" environment at the Today show with helping her to get through the challenging times.

"If I had any other kind of job, I wouldn't have even tried to come back," she said. "I just felt like, what else should I do? And my mom would have said the same — 'Honey, just keep going, just keep going.' So, I am."

Nancy is believed to have been abducted from her Tucson, Ariz., home in the early morning hours of Feb. 1. The Pima County Sheriff's Department and the FBI have been conducting an investigation into the situation, but no suspects have been named in the more than four months since Nancy was taken.
Savannah took an extended leave of absence from the Today show amid the investigation, returning in early April after sitting down with Hoda Kotb for an emotional interview. During the interview, Savannah opened up about the impact the situation had on her young children, whom she shares with husband Mike Feldman.
"It's so hard with kids, you know, because you want to protect them," Savannah said of the case during her March interview. "Vale would write me all the time, 'Mama, any leads? You hear anything? Any hope?'"
Savannah said that she and her husband "try to talk to" their kids about what's going on, and said that their goal is to "try to give them a little more certainty than we have, to let them grieve."
During that same interview, Savannah also shared her commitment to her kids, saying of her return to the show, "I will do it for my kids. I will. I will not fall apart. I will not let whoever did this take my children's mother from them. I will not let them take my joy. They will not take my sister's joy. They will not take my brother's joy. They will not take our love. They will not take our faith. But our anguish is real. We need help. We need someone to tell the truth."
In May, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told PEOPLE that he was confident that the case would be solved. "My team, I've said all along, they're gonna solve this," Nanos said. "I fully, 100% believe that."
