On April 8, Hulu premiered the first three episodes of The Testaments, a sequel series to the 15-time Emmy Award-winning dystopian drama starring Elisabeth Moss.
Like its predecessor, which wrapped after six seasons in May 2025, this coming-of-age tale was also adapted from Margaret Atwood's novel series and follows a new generation of young women trapped inside the Republic of Gilead.
"I wanted to explore the beginning of the end of Gilead," the author told Oprah Daily in September 2019, when the sequel to her 1985 book first came out. "How did these things fall apart? That idea fascinated me."
The Testaments is set four years after the downfall of Boston in the final season of The Handmaid's Tale, and follows "a group of privileged teenage daughters of commanders who are preparing to become wives to the state’s most powerful men," per the official synopsis.
Ann Dowd will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia alongside stars Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday.

The first three episodes of The Testaments were released on Hulu on April 8.
Creator Bruce Miller previously promised that the new series wouldn't be a repeat of The Handmaid's Tale.

”We tried not to make the same show — it’s got younger voices, it’s got a completely different feel and a completely different vibe but it’s still Gilead," he told The Hollywood Reporter in April 2025.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly that same month, Miller, who was also at the helm of the original series, likened it to "Mean Girls growing up in Gilead."

There are 10 episodes in the first season of The Testament. But Miller has his fingers crossed for a lot more in the future.
“I’m trying to be realistic and my sense in this environment is say 30, 40, 50 episodes," he told Deadline in March 2026.
Executive producer Warren Littlefield described the inaugural season as "an awakening" for the characters, as it's "the only world they’ve ever known and they’re not fully aware of the horrors of it just yet."
