Acclaimed director and actor Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife of 36 years, Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were pronounced dead on December 14. CNN reported that the Los Angeles Police Department announced that the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and "was responsible for their deaths" in a December 15 statement on X.
Reiner discussed his marriage to Singer Reiner, with whom he shared two other children, Jake, 34, and Romy, 28, in a September 2025 interview on Ted Danson's podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name. During the interview, he shared that his late parents, actor and comedian Carl Reiner and singer and actress Estelle Reiner, were married for 65 years until the latter's death in 2008 at the age of 94. Carl died at the age of 98 in 2020.
Reiner said that his mother shared her "secret" to a long-lasting marriage during "her 60th wedding anniversary."
"She said, 'The key is to find somebody who can stand you.' Not somebody you can put up with. Somebody who can stand you," said Reiner during the September 2025 interview.
The Stand by Me director said he agreed with his mother's advice.
"Because that's what it is. I mean, you know, I mean, every marriage, you know, you got to accept the other person. That's the only way it works," continued the All in the Family star.
He also said that his father offered him romantic advice "when [he] was young."
"He said if there's something about the person that you're with that annoys you, know for a fact that that is never going to go away," said Reiner.
During the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast episode, Reiner spoke about meeting Singer Reiner during the production of his 1989 film, When Harry Met Sally. He explained that he had been "single for 10 years" following his divorce from his first wife, the late Penny Marshall, when he was directing the beloved romcom. According to Reiner, filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld, who was "the director of photography" for When Harry Met Sally, encouraged him to date Singer Reiner.
Reiner said he wasn't originally interested in Singer Reiner after he found out that she was a smoker. He explained that Marshall, with whom he shared his daughter Tracy, 61, smoked "every day of her life."
He then fondly recalled officially meeting Singer Reiner, who was a photographer, while taking a lunch break during the production of When Harry Met Sally. Reiner was immediately taken by Singer Reiner, and they "started seeing each other."
In addition, he said he "changed the ending of" When Harry Met Sally after he started dating Singer Reiner. He explained that he originally had Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) going their separate ways at the end of the film. However, he said he realized that relationships can work after being with his second wife. As fans of the film are aware, Harry and Sally end up getting married after he emotionally reveals his feelings for her at a New Year's Eve Party.
